Welcome to the outsiders test drive meme! You can use this post to tag with characters you're interested in bringing to the game or who you'd like to try out in the setting.

[ now there is a voice she has not heard in a while! andraste's tits, the man hasn't changed a bit. how completely unfair. she puts on an amused smile as she looks over at him. ]

I don't know, you might resemble her if you grow out your hair some.

[ oho, a smirk replaces her smile. ]

It might just be the entire treasury. But I see a woeful lack of mules here. Are you volunteering?

[ Anders mislikes that smirk. He's seen it before. Generally it heralds trouble. ]

What, me? Volunteer? When have you known me to volunteer for anything?

... except killing darkspawn. I'll admit I volunteered for that. I thought it would involve more shooting lightning at things, less hiking. Certainly much less looting.

[ When they're looting, people have to carry the loot. On the other hand, all that looting's what funded the riches Solona is presently toting about. Anyhow the complaints are mostly for show; Anders has no difficulty whatsoever taking the gold off her hands. He's more muscular than the average Circle mage has any business being. ]

[ the exact kind of trouble he can never resist. ]

Oh, you're not saying I'll need to twist your arm, are you?

And here I thought you enjoyed all the exercise! Hiking is not so very risky as swimming, after all.

[ she gives him an earnest smile when he takes the heavy purse off her. for all the banter, she has realized over the years that he is one of the best and most loyal friends she has made. ]

Thank you. And I meant it, you know. I've missed the smell of damp cat. And you as well of course.

[ Anders affects a tone of alarm. ]

No one needs to twist my arm! It's just fine the way it is, thanks!

[ But he grins at Amell and lets the pretense drop just as readily. Her allusion to his infamous escape-by-swimming is taken as a compliment rather than complaint; though it would've been understandable for the other apprentices to resent the consequent loss of swimming sessions, Anders really didn't have their welfare in mind at the time. More interested in saving his own skin. When, inevitably, he was brought back to the Tower, the net effect had been an increase in notoriety and therefore popularity. ]

The feeling's mutual, you know. [ A pause for effect, then: ] Who wouldn't miss the smell of damp cat?

Then it's settled. Thank you ever so much for your co-operation, Anders.

[ luckily for solona, all she'd missed out on by then was the recreational activity of swimming. her lessons had already been completed. she laughs some. ]

It's nice to know I've been missed. [ her eyebrows raise. ] My guess would be Oghren.

[ That gets a snort from Anders. ] Oghren's just jealous. No number of cats could get him the sort of attention I can get.

And what sort of attention would that be? The last I heard, you were one of the heroes of Vigil's Keep!

Could it be that the cat helps you earn more hero-worship?

I believe you can inspire that all on your own, I'll have you know.

[wantedapostate]

[ He laughs incredulously. ] Me? A hero? All I did was set darkspawn on fire, same as I always do. Well, and healed the odd person or ten. Mind you, I won't duck the label if it does me any good.

No, hero-worship isn't what Oghren resents. The cat's as good as a baby. Carrying a wee kitten makes me more ... [ He tilts his head. ] Approachable. No cat could do that for a dwarf who waves his battle-axe at everything and probably stores the odd snack or two in his beard.

Anyhow I like cats. I'd carry Ser Pounce-a-lot to the end of the world, no matter what anyone thought.

Humility looks good on you, Anders. Seriously, though, thank you. You saved a good many lives during that siege.

[ a twinkle enters her eyes. ]

Oh, I see. A small, fuzzy, defenseless creature makes seduction that much easier. Oghren would never know if it could work for him unless he decides to try it.

[ she'd heard every syllable of that banter, dude. solona's smile fades and leaves behind a wistful look. ]

I understand. I feel that way about my dog.

[ He blinks. ] Your dog?

[spellmight]

Hafter, yes. He bonded with me after Ostagar. The King has borrowed him indefinitely.

[ she'd only gotten to see him again when she'd gone searching for morrigan. that dog is probably living life in the lap of luxury, getting fat on table scraps and siring more pups than may be counted.

but mabari aren't meant for to be layabouts. and solona misses him. ]

Borrowed. [ Anders repeats this as if he's tasting the word and doesn't like the flavor. ] Who borrows someone else's pet?

A King, or so I've found out.

[ there are a lot of things about alistair that solona has come to dislike. this is only one of them. ]

I got to see him again briefly when we went to search for Morrigan. But I assume the arrangement was meant to be only temporary.

[wantedapostate]

[ Anders tucks his free arm through Solona's and leads her away from the vendor's counter to a clearer space that's at least marginally quieter. As they walk, he continues: ] I really don't understand. Why did this happen? Just because he's a king and you're a mage ... ? Were you deemed unworthy of keeping a mabari? The Hero of blighted Ferelden?

[spellmight]

[ solona loops her arm the rest of the way through his, and sighs as they come to a stop in an out-of-the-way corner. ]

I was deemed unworthy of many things in his eyes, Anders. My dog, I assume he wanted as a stud for his kennels.

I allowed it because I thought he deserved a break from the Deep Roads and darkspawn blood. But he has been kept far too long. When we find our way out of here, I will be giving Alistair an earful.

[wantedapostate]

[ An earful from Amell ... hardly blistering, but she does have the power to make you feel like a bad puppy. ] Rub his nose in what he's done, then? Well, you know you have my support. [ This is said more soberly than most of what Anders says to anyone. ]

[spellmight]

I've never been put-off from doing so before, believe me.

[ she looks up at him, and finally gives him a small smile. ]

Thank you. That means a lot to me.

Good. I meant it. [ Anders turns his head and clears his throat. Moments of sincerity like this -- from her -- are a little too intense for his comfort, sometimes. He learned early on not to seem too serious about, well, anything. Particularly the things that matter most. ]

I'm sorry if I brought up anything unpleasant. I just wasn't aware you had a dog, that's all. I'd never seen him.

I know. [ over the long years they have known one another, solona has come to be able to read him well enough. moments of honesty such as these are rare with him and she cherishes each one he decides to share with her. ]

You didn't, no need to worry. But I will hope that Hafter has done his duty as a loyal Fereldan by now and may come home.

I miss him.
